Rafe "Chappy" Collins, Jr. is the oldest son of Rafe and Sarah Collins. Rafe, his younger brother Willie and a few of work acquaintances from the Oakland Navel Supply Center were returning from a weekend trip to Reno, Nevada when Rafe became ill. Rafe passed away quietly while hospitalized, 12 days after suffering a brain aneurysm at the age of 49.
While semi conscious Rafe was said to have laughed out loud saying, "Deb, leave me alone", just before passing. Rafe's daughters, Shirley, Yolanda and Deborah, loved to tease and playfully tickle their dad, who loved to laugh.
Rafe was an excellent cook, making jelly cakes on many Sundays. He loved cartoons, his favorite being the "Road Runner."
A few weeks before Rafe passed away, he, his wife Alice and girls spent a week vacationing at Yosemite Park with life long friends, Leon and Margaret Roundtree, and their children, June, Leon Jr. and Derwin Roundtree. It was a very blessed and fun time for all.
Rafe was born in Jonesville, Louisiana, on February 16, 1910. In the 1940's Rafe and his cousin Archie Whitley were amoung the first of the family to migrate to Oakland, California from Jonesville.
